i know that wendy's has had a struggle with the commercials since dave died, trying to abandon the nostalgia associated with the owner cum spokesperson, and trying to create a deferential to the standard fast food juicy burger shots....but i - as a big wendy's supporter - have absolutely no clue what they are trying to achieve in their new campaign. scene: people of all ethnicities, ages, etc, covering the demographic gambit, are kicking the base of tree trunks in a gloomy monochromatic forest, (instinct says this will be an insurance commercial) enter main character: middle age average standard every-day type guy wearing a bright red braided wig (initial reference to pippy longstockings) he then has an epiphany about eating burgers that aren't frozen (say what now?) and he rallies the other tree kickers (note: perhaps tires would have been more appropriate...but i digress) to join him and boycott all other burger joints and implies that they should eat at wendys....end scene. blink. crickets chirp. blank stare. i now realize that the wig referred to the wendy's girl hair (can i ask, do they even use that logo anymore), but i have no idea what the point of the tree kicking was. at all. if i think hard enough, i might assume that people are all followers and will do anything just because someone else is and that until someone "takes a stand" they will do the meaningless stupid thing (that is, eating frozen burgers -ouch my tooth)...but i really think i am trying too hard here. i mean, i'm watching tv...i dont want to think...if i wanted to think i would open a book...non?commercial disappointment numero duo: cherrios. topic: new crunchy cheerios. ok so the commercial has a family eating the new cherrios, and they hear the beat of their chews (slightly nauseating if you think about it) and they start tap tap tapping their toes, and clinking their glasses all to this crunch "beat"....can i please ask who is the absolute genius was who came up with this ingenious-never-done-before-circa-1980's commercial? (dripping with sarcasm). my other complaint about this ad, is the sheer volume with which it is bombarded...don't the marketing peeps over at genreal mills know that more that 2 viewings of an ad in a time slot is an in-effective marketing spend? come on people!
commercial number three: jeep. scene begins: two guys steal a canoe from a girl's camp site, they get in it and giggle sneakily as they paddle away, she wakes from her tent in time to see them, and jumps into her car (it happens to be a jeep) and goes to head them off. she sees the spot she was (aiming?) for and jumps out of her car and picks up a coyote in her finger tips (i-crush-your-head style) and places the coyote/wolf into the canoe with the thieves. she then smiles smugly and gets back into her jeep and drives away, presumably back to the camp site, still without her canoe, (she sure showed them) end scene. thoughts? anyone? what does this tell me about the car? i presume that the car is strong enough to have carried the canoe in question up there....but i mean really?! personally i'd say this commercial is mostly about graphic showboating...i was thinking maybe photoshop or hp... but not jeep. sad isn't it.
here's to the commercials that made us laugh and we could understand, and i'm keeping my fingers crossed that we will see some of them surface again soon....something original...like a canadian beer commercial ;)
