gen y lull-a-bye

so i was out shopping with my girlfriend on the weekend for baby room stuff...not for me...for her. she is 8 months preggers and we were decorating her nursery. they have chosen not to find out what they are having, and after spending the day with her, it reconfirms my want...nay, my need...to know. it is virtually impossible to find anything that isn't gender specific! anyways we had a great day and chose really cute things (lots of creams and greens) and she taught me a ton too...there is a lot more to this whole baby thing than i thought!

anyways with all this baby talk, i started thinking about my childhood rooms, and what i liked about them, and the bedtime routine. the thing i loved most was getting my parents to sing us lull-a-byes. i would beg them to sing just one more song, and it didn't matter how well they sang or really what they said, just that they spent those last few minutes of my day with me. so i started trying to remember the songs, and i realized that the songs are super outdated. some are even not very p.c. now...not that they were racy, just that the wording has...expired... in terms of today's society.

what will i sing to my kids? what will our generation choose to lull our kids to sleep? so this has started my quest. the quest for the gen y lull-a-byes. lyndon and i have come up with some U2 songs that work nicely - "the sweetest thing", some g n r, some red hot chili peppers, a little six pence none the richer ("there she goes") too. our rules for the songs were: nothing that gets you excited and fired up, nothing that refers to sexual acts (ie. some choice nirvana songs) or exteme violence (can we change "sunday bloody sunday" to "sunday muddy sunday"?), and nothing with explicit swearing. the songs can be a faster pace, but need to have the potential to be slowed down. the songs also should be somewhat refelective of the age we grew up in...you know...represent! (small fist pump)

so now i put it out to all of you...will you help me compile the lull-a-bye song book for our generation to sing to their kids? i need help with this, i have a great project in mind here! so please please, if you can think of any that would work, leave me a comment with your suggestions...and thanks in advance.

ps. what about "the sweater song"...can i slow that down enough for it to be relatively soothing..i think a little weezer just might do.

pps. i have seen the rock-a-baby cds online, but they dont have words, just chime-y annoying noises...i need creativity here people!
