i know some of you have known my general chagrin towards the disney princesses....and their lack of positive attributes....classically the mermaid who gives up her voice for a man she doesn't know....sigh.
i read this post http://girlofcardigan.com/dear-beautiful-girl-once-upon-a-time/ and it made me pause...to give pause when it comes to my personal attitude regarding this princess-assault we, the mother of daughters, face. to in the very least think about it in another light. i don't agree with each spin on the princesses that is made here, but what it made me think was that perhaps sloughing them off as fodder designed to set feminism back a couple decades was a bit harsh. perhaps its worth it to take the time to point out and recognize the remarkable or admirable characteristics these "royals" possess...if you are so willing.
aside: i have always clung to belle (even during my cinderella tirades) my personal favourite...as the princess who falls into the decent-role-model category...a book loving, loyal daughter who sacrificed herself to save her father and fell in love ...regardless of appearance... not bad right?
moreover, perhaps the negativity that is negated to the these princesses is really not the fault of the story tellers, but more that of the marketers who cannot hold themselves back enough to know that pushing a camera that says "you're pretty as a princess" with each click may be sending a less than exemplary message....but then again...what about the young girl who feels plain or needs self assurance...might this not be the exact toy that helps her avert depression?! ...you see what i'm saying here folks?
this article made me think...lighten up...don't give up...
but tell the story you want your daughters to hear...because its in there if you look for it.
